January 05, 2002 | 12:31 PM A New Song
Last night I drank 2 bottles of wine and wrote a new song with John. I am thrilled with the song and it's a different direction for me lyrically. It sort of reminds me of Leonard Cohen. It goes like this: Doe eyed Leila by the Seinepeeling oranges on Easter morning Sunday service Notre Dame sipping coffee on the sidewalk Seven years of broken mirrors how much bad luck has that brought you? Church bells echoe through the rain in the grey light latin quarter The flecks of blue in your dress Le monde si belle qu'il me blesse Sacred heart bends the shadows of our cathedral by the water Up the stairs to the tower See the beach stretch out forever I want the truth you make me guess Le monde si belle qu'il me blesse Doe eyed Leila by the Seine flakes of pastry on your collar Witch or angel, lover friend Silver sphynx of duty's daughter We ride the river to its end Le monde si belle qu'il me blesse So that's the song. I was sort of thinking about how Joni Mitchell wrote most of Blue while she was in Europe, and I wanted to try writing something that intimate and um well... European for lack of a better word. So I thought about being in Paris and Rennes with Leila when I was 16. I could write a whole album about what happened in that month. John's guitar is gorgeous too-- all finger picking and very simple. It sounds like Ida, who I've been listening to a lot lately. I can't wait until we start recording. Our catalogue of songs is beginning to take shape. We're going to call the record Down They Forgot. I really hope Sean moves up and lives with us and joins our band. I also hope Dawson continues to jam with us because his piano adds a great deal and he's a lot of fun onstage. We are really really good. Something is going to happen. I can feel it.
