Jesus. It's wonderful to be told you sound like a "complete idiot".

I don't feel like writing a big essay right now, but when I compared this culture to Weimar Berlin, I was talking about the parallel between our consumer driven increasingly shallow culture and the attitudes of many Berliners in the 20's who wanted nothing more than to drink dance and screw in Cabaret establishments while ignoring the political tumult occurring around them. Yes Hunter post WW I Germany was a depressed state where inflation caused the cost of bread to rise by thousands of marks. The Weimar Republic was highly unstable and was under seige by both the left and the right. There was a great deal of political unease and multiple parties were attempting to wrestle control of the government away. I am well aware of this because I have been doing NOTHING BUT studying it since I got my role in Cabaret which has to do directly with the period in question.

Many citizens during this time turned a blind eye to what was gonig on, hence the rise in the decadent Cabaret establishments all over Berlin. In order to escape their troubles, many people sought Fun and Amusement. This is similar it seems to me, as things are now.

It is also similar to our current ituation since the Nazis had no mandate from the people. This current government was not so much "elected" as it was installed by The Supreme Court. As far as it being the fault of American Citizens as to who is in office right now, although I agree completely that people do not get involved enough in government, the fact that in order to even run for office you have to have an enormous amount of money for a campaign excludes most Americans from direct participation. Plus, look at how third party candidates are treated-- i.e. Nader not being able to even take part in the 2000 debates.I am sorry if you disagree with me-- I have a great deal of respect for your intelligence, how very well read you are, and for your opininons. But I don't appreciate being referred to as sounding like a fool or an idiot. And if you misunderstood the parallel that I was drawing bewteen a certain population of Weimar era Berlin-- those who drank and danced and ignored while the Nazis came to power (I suggest reading Christopher Isherwood's memoir on the subject) I apologize for having not made my point clearer.
